The North St. Paul Air Force Base was founded on July 1, 1942 by the United States Army in order to provide a new and more efficient homeland security force. The base grew rapidly and soon had its own airfield, which became known as "Montgomery Field." After World War II, the Air Forces began a gradual growth and expansion that continues to this day. Today, the North St. Paul AFB operates more than 100 aircrafts including fighter jets, bombers, helicopters, and drones. The unit was known as the 9th Bombardment Squadron and served in the Vietnam War. In 1974, the 9th Bombardment Squadron was reassigned to RAF Lakenheath, England and renamed 2nd Tactical Missile Wing. The wing was disbanded in 1992 and its assets were transferred to the Minnesota Air National Guard's 6th Tactical Missile Wing at Eagan Air National Guardsmen Station. In 1998, 2nd Tactical Missile Wing relocated from Lakenheath to North Dakota after being disbanded there. It equipped and trained new missile crews at Minot AFB before returning to Minneapolis-St.Paul in 2003 for storage until it could be moved again into a new hangar on McGuire Drive at Wright-Patterson AFB Later that year, it returned to active duty with 439th Strategic Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Squadron as part of 439th Operations Group - a wing formed from components of other units which had been merged oractivated since its activation as an air forces squadron back in 1948). In October 2009, 3rd Tactical Missile Wing activated at Hennepin County Airport adjacent to Saint Anthony Falls International Airport with MQ-9 Reaper drones which will help support Operation Neptune Spear operations against terrorist targets worldwide (the program is also funded by Raytheon Co.)

Additionally in 1955 HQAFE activated Strategic Airlift Command which transported troops and equipment throughout NATO by flying commercial airlines under military escort making it possible for battle-tested equipment to be brought into theatre quickly without risking enemy counterattack or conflict on land resulting in greater battlefield efficiency overall
