The Northfield Army Garrison was established in 1869 in order to support the military presence in Minnesota. The Garrison served as a training ground for the local militia, and also functioned as a barracks for soldiers. In 1907, the Garrison was redesignated as the Northfield Army Depot. The Depot was used to store ammunition, supplies, and other military equipment. It also served as a base of operations for troops assigned to garrison duty in nearby Duluth. In 1951, the Depot was closed and its assets were transferred to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Naval Shipyard. However, despite this transfer, the depot's history remains deeply linked with that of the Northfield Army Garrison. Today, it is still used by troops stationed at various locations throughout Minnesota.
