Oakdale is a small town in the state of Minnesota, United States. The population was 551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Oakdale is located in southwestern Ramsey County on U.S. Highway 61, just east of the Hutchinson River and northwest of Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport. The first settler in what became Oakdale was Jerald Fenton, who arrived in 1854. He named his land "Oakdale." The post office was established there in 1858, and the first store opened its doors in 1860. In 1862, an engine shop and lumberyard were built near the present site of the schoolhouse; these businesses remain active to this day. In 1870, John Wirth founded a farm west of town on what is now White Earth Road. Wirth's home still stands and has been used as a museum since 1973. Wirth ran a grocery store from his home until his death in 1902; it continued to be run by his widow until her death in 1975. That same year saw another milestone for Oakdale when Pella Academy (now Park Nicollet) moved into school buildings on West Main Street from their original location four miles north on Route 6A (now Interstate 94). In 1916, Pearson Air Force Base was established at nearby Clearwater Air Force Base; when that base closed in 2003, most of its personnel moved to Rochester, Minnesota then Mankato after that city's closure during the 1990s downsizing process known as "the Great Lakes Basin coup." Oakdale is a small village located in the extreme northwest corner of Minnesota, United States. It was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish settlers and has since been an agricultural center with a population of just over 100. The community has one school, two churches, and four businesses. Oakdale is known for its natural resources, including pine trees, coalmining operations, and oil exploration.
Oakdale was first settled in 1854 when the Wabash, a Dakota Sioux, and Pottawatomie, an Ojibwe, chiefs bought land from the Minnesota Territorial government. The town was named after Oakdale Creek in northern Minnesota. In 1858, settlers built a small log cabin on the site of present-day Maple Grove and began to grow maize and other crops. The first school was established in1859. By 1865, the town had reached a population of 10 residents. In 1870, timber investors bought 400 acres of land east of Oakdale for $1 per acre. They erected sawmills and erected homes for their workers. The town continued to grow until it had a population of 150 people by 1880. By 1890, most of the logging operations were discontinued because of increased railroad traffic. After that time, Oakdale became aresidential community with schools and churches serving its citizens.
