Rosemount was founded in 1849 as a small community of Norwegian immigrants. The town quickly grew into a bustling center for agriculture and industry, with a population of over 500 residents by the early 1900s. The town experienced significant growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on the Mississippi River, which made it an ideal spot for shipping products and services from their agricultural colonies in Minnesota to the rest of the United States. In addition, Rosemount became known for its elaborately carved wooden houses, which were often used as bedroom suites or family homes. The town's fortunes changed in the 1920s when it was chosen as the site of what is now America's first aluminum smelting plant. The plant created many jobs and helped Rosemount become one of America's wealthiest towns. However, despite these successes,rosemount suffered several major setbacks in the 1930s due to World War II. For example, following Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces bombed and destroyed much of Rosemount; this caused many local businesses to close their doors and lead to a dramatic decrease in population. Additionally, economic conditions deteriorated after World War II until they reached their peak during the Korean War when many jobs disappeared due to military service. After that conflict ended in 1953,Rosemount began experiencing rapid decline; however, it has slowly begun recovering since then thanks to new investments by both locals and outside sources such as tourism and retail development. The name of the town is derived from "Rosendale," a community near St. Paul that Rosemount annexed from in 1892. Rosemount is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area and it has a population of 11,491 as of July 2017.[1]
