The coffee industry has a long and rich history in Sartell, Minnesota. The first coffee crop was grown on the farm of John Fetterman in 1847. In 1857, J.P. Morgan sent his friend and investor Ellis Island Trustee, Cornelius Vanderbilt to buy land in what is now Sartell for a new coffee plantation. Vanderbilt brought with him a shipment of Ethiopian Coffee beans that he intended to roasted himself at his home in New York City. However, when the railroad arrived in Sartell, they purchased the whole town for $1,000 and started building their own railway station right next to the old millrace where they planned to roast their coffee. This meeting place became known as "The Gilded Age Coffee House". By 1870, there were over 20 different roasters producing quality coffee from various parts of Africa and South America including Ethiopia, The Netherlands, Brazil and Argentina. In 1876-77 Cimarron Coffee Company opened their doors with two steamboats bringing 6 tons of high-grade Ethiopian coffees direct from Harrar (the capital of Abyssinia). This event marked the beginning of Dutch influence on American coffee culture as well as international trade within the brewing industry which would continue until World War II

Today, Sartell remains an agricultural town with a large dairy industry that employs about 1,200 people nationally; however, it also has a growing number of businesses related to health care and technology including two hospitals (Hennepin County Medical Center and Rochester–based Mayo Clinic), dozens of small businesses, several professional schools (including one for dentists), and many homes used for agriculture or real estate purposes. The earliest resident of Sartell were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1871. At the time, the area was sparsely populated and not yet developed as it is today. The settlers worked together to create a new life for themselves and their children. They built homes, cultivated crops, raised livestock and engaged in other customary activities that helped define early Sartell society. Sartell's growth began slowly but steadily over the next few years. In 1875, two brothers-in-law named John Hagen and Ole Bjerke opened a general store in Sartell which quickly became a popular destination for locals looking for goods unavailable anywhere else around county. In 1876, anotherNorwegian immigrant named Peder Olsen established a farmstead along Ulvik Creek north of town. This agriculture operation continued to play an important role in local economy until after World War II when it switched focus to tourism development). The population of Sarteller exploded during this time with newcomers coming from all over Norway to start anew: First came farmers who erected frame houses on land they had bought; later arrivals poured into the small town from all over rural Minnesota; finally, waves of refugees - many originating from Russia - arrived during World War I seeking refuge from waragi rls abroad (). However, despite these external influences.,the nucleus of what would become SartelleL grew out of existing households within the original Norwegian community: men Diskin (1868-1925), Johan Jansen (1870-1945) and Ole Pedersen (1872-1935). All three men had family ties back home that contributed greatly towards social stability within early SARTELLL . Jansen also served as treasurer for both Stoltzfusen Grain Elevator Company (a predecessor to present day US grain elevator company NWEA)and Stoltzfusen lumberyard (). Olle Pedersen played an important role as president of Boardman Canning Factory () before his death at age 96 following a long illness.. The village’s first post office opened on Valentine’s Day 1879 under name “Stoltzfusen” (). After only five years service (), it was renamed “SARTELL” after Supervisor John Arelid (1863-1920) who donated land on which the post office sat..
