The Marine Corps has a rich history in Sartell, Minnesota. The town was first settled by Danish immigrants in the mid-19th century and became an important military installation during World War I. Sartell is a small town in the Minnesota Territory, United States. The population was 521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Cloud–Mankato Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Sartell was Pierre-Jean de La Salle in 1796, and he named it after his friend and fellow explorer, Sébastien Chasseur de la Salle. The first settler in what is now Sartell was David Woodcock in 1819. A post office called Sartell was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it closed in 1903. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.53%, is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 431 people, 151 households, and 108 families residing in the town. The population density was 14 people per square mile (5/km²). There were 158 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95% White, 2% African American, 1% Native American, 2% Asian, and 0.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%. In 2002, marines sent to Operation Iraqi Freedom were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their heroism and selfless service. In 2006, marines deployment to Afghanistan earned them another Presidential Unit Citation. In 2007, marines conducted Operation Neptune's Spear which saw fierce fighting against Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. This operation was also honored with an Olympic gold medal. In 2009, marines deployed to Haiti after the devastating earthquake that killed more than 200 people. The deployment was also honored with an Olympic gold medal from the United States Olympic Committee. The 2010 marine deployment to Op For Truth was one of the largest ever mounted operations by marine units when it consisted of 7800 Marines and sailors from 11 ships including USS Enterprise (CVN 64) and USS Makin Island (LSD-5). Sartell is a city in Saint Cloud County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. Sartell is the smallest city in Saint Cloud County and the second-smallest city in Minnesota. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers to Sartell were Isaac and Rebecca Niven who arrived on July 15, 1854 from what is now Lebanon, Pennsylvania. They named their settlement after John Sartain who had settled near them on a farm two years earlier. The town site was selected by General James Rea during his survey ofSaint Cloud County in 1857. The new town site lay along present day Highway 53 and Third Street east of present day Lakeville Road/Route 811 south of Interstate 35W (now I-35E). Sartell's history begins with its incorporation as a village on November 12, 1871. On December 3rd issue of the "Saint Cloud Pioneer", it was announced that “the citizens of this village have formed themselves into a body to organize themselves into an incorporated municipality” under the name Sartell Village Incorporated Serial No 1111” On January 1st 1872village trustees voted to change the name to Sartell Township due to lack of support from residents for an original name which they felt would be too similar to other nearby villages with similar names like Maple Grove or Maynardville On February 11th 1872 Village Trustees adopted Resolution No 421 authorizing Mayor Aiken Smith and Councilmen Prentice & Downing to purchase land Lots Nos 2 thru 4 adjoining First Ward Cemetery for $5 per lot when sold by Jno Crouch at auction on March 6th . This purchase turned out to be successful as lots Nos 2 thru 4 became Mound City Cemetery which later became Sarteller Cemetery A post office called Sarton was established at this location on April 9th 1870 and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 6th 1902 . In 1899 there were only six residences in town but by 1915 there were over one hundred residences In 1916 Hennepin County took over responsibility for mail services within SaintCloud county so a new post office called Aberdeen opened at this location on October 1st 1916 In 1925 changes were made to the law that eliminated precinct commissioners so all township elections must take place at large meetings instead which led to more residential development around this time By 1941 there were 425 residents living in town including 248 males and 152 females
