The National Guard of the United States of America was organized on July 10th, 1903 under the provisions of the National Defense Act. The act granted the President authority to active duty units of the military for a period not to exceed three years. On December 17th, 1916, Congress passed and President Woodrow Wilson signed into law Senate Bill No. 246 which authorized the United States Secret Service to provide illumination and security for international fairs and other events. This event led to increased demand for memberships in the National Guard and on March 25th, 1917, Governor James M. Cox appointed Sartell as one of four towns in Minnesota designated as sites for training new members of the national guard. On December 16th, 1933 both Houses of Congress passed House Resolution 639 which called upon all states to establish within their respective legislatures national guardsmen councils with a mission to advise and assist governors in preparing Statenational Guard programs. The first such council was established in Iowa on January 3rd, 1934 by Representative John Pritchard. With World War II raging throughout Europe and North Africa, many men were called up into service with various branches of our military- including those from Sartell who became part of Company C-7/2nd Infantry Regiment (National Guard) assigned to Company H-9/2nd Heavy Tank Battalion activated at Grand Forks Army Airfield on October 15th 1941 during World War II as part of 2nd Armored Division Headquarters unit stationed at Fort Snelling Army Airfield near Minneapolis MN until relieved by 4th Armored Division Headquarters unit at Stillwater Army Airfield June 1945 when these two units returned home after serving their country with distinction
