The history of South St. Paul dates back to 1854 when it was platted as part of the townsite of Northfield by commissioners from Duluth. In 1864, South St. Paul became the county seat of Hennepin County and remained so until 1961 when Minneapolis took that role. The first settlers in what is now South Saint Paul were farmers who came to the area in the mid-19th century looking for land to farm following a wave of settlement throughout western Minnesota after American Civil War victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg. By 1870, some merchants had organized into a town board and by 1874 it had acquired a post office and two churches which stood today on First Street near Center Avenue. Growth continued until World War I when much of ruralMinnesota went through hard times due to agricultural destruction caused by war efforts; this led to increased immigration to what was then ruralHennepin County starting in the early 20th century including many Czechs and Slovaks who worked on nearby farms or as craftsmen or laborers in local factories during tough economic times before coming Westward again during more recent waves (1930s-1950s). In 1938 railroad executives decided that since most people living within five miles (8 km) of downtown Minneapolis would have no need for trains other than transportation for work purposes, they would combine their services under one company name - probably doing away with steam locomotives altogether and giving people walking access instead which they did not yet have with cars! In 1949, South St. Paul was annexed by Minneapolis; however, it continued to serve as its own municipal government until 1959.
