The area had a rich history of artisans and farmers who cultivated crops and brewed coffee. In 1892, businessman John Waddell started a small business selling roasted beans from his farm in southeast Minneapolis. Waddell's customers were primarily farmers and their families living near the city center. By 1916, Waddell had opened a larger store in downtown St. Cloud and began serving customers from all over the state of Minnesota. By 1920, Waddell's store had become one of the largest in town and had become known for its high-quality espresso beans and roasts. In 1937, he passed away at age ninety-six; his store continued to serve locals until it closed its doors in 1984. However, his legacy lives on through his coffee beans which are now sold by several local businesses across the state of Minnesota.

In St. Cloud, Minnesota, the first coffee shop was opened in 1906 by a couple of businessmen. The business continued to grow and expand until it became known as theIndependent Coffee Shop. In 1928, the Independent Coffee Shop was purchased by Dutch businessman Jörg Müller who renamed it “Müller’s Coffee House”. The name change lasted for over fifty years and the coffee store continued to be operational under that name until 1984 when it closed its doors for good. Since then, there have been many attempts to reopen Müller’s Coffee House including a restaurant venture in 2006 and even an attempt at developing a nearby coffee farm in 2010 but all have failed. However, another incarnation of Müller’s Coffee House is currently open as a café located on Nicollet Mall in downtown St. Cloud.

The city of St. Cloud, Minnesota was founded in 1881 by a group of Scandinavian immigrants. The City was named after the Archbishop of Canterbury, George Macdonald. In 1907, the city annexed the towns of Stillwater and Maple Lake. The annexation made St. Cloud one of the most populous cities inMinnesota. The arrival of steelworkers in the early 20th century helped to spur development in downtown Stcloud and other areas around the city center. Today, downtown is home to several popular businesses including Macy's, Sears and Kmart as well as two universities – Central College and Saint Cloud State University – as well as numerous cultural venues such as First United Methodist Church and Museum (FUM).
The city of St. Cloud was founded on December 12, 1847 by Andrew W. Smith and his wife, Catherine. The first post office in the city was established on January 1, 1848. The town was named for Saint Cloud Cathedral in Finland. In 1870, the city became a county seat of Minnesota. On February 15, 1907, the City of St. Cloud was incorporated as a municipality within the County of Winona. On July 1, 1958, the City of St. Cloud separated from Winona County and became an independent municipality under its own government with its own budget and police department. On November 16, 1961, the City of St. Cloud annexed the Village of Birchmount to its municipal boundaries
