There is no question that firearms have played a role in the history of St. Cloud, Minnesota. The city’s first settler, Alexander McNaught, brought with him two pistols and a shotgun to start a new life in what would become the state capital of Minnesota. subsequent settlers also acquired firearms, including Chauncey Griggs who bought 100 rifles and shotguns from George Armstrong in 1853. In 1851, John Akeley bought La Prairie from Lacroix and renamed it Fort Snelling after his friend General David Augustus Snelling who had played a significant role in helping to secure American independence from Great Britain. In 1867, Snelling sold Fort Snelling to James Guthrie for $5 million which led to Guthrie's development of what would become known as downtown St. Cloud which began developing around this time. Growth continued throughout the 20th century with various businesses moving into downtown including First National Bank (1934), Hennepin County Agricultural Experiment Station (1938), First National Life Insurance Company (1940), Wernham Glass Company (1947), Anheuser Busch Brewing Company (1980), and Meijer Inc.(2001). In 2006, construction began on One River Place – one of North America's tallest skyscrapers – which brought new life to downtown Stcloud and helped spur growth in other areas of the city such as South Dakota Avenue between State Street and Fourth Avenue SE
