The St. Paul area has been home to the Minnesota National Guard for over 160 years, and the military has had a significant presence in the community since World War II. During that time, the Guard has deployed to both conflicts – most notably during The Great Lakes War of 1944-1945, when it was called up to help fight in Europe. The Guard also played a significant role in our current conflict with ISIS, deploying forces into Syria and Iraq in order to fight against this terrorist group. Today, there are several military installations located within St.Paul City limits; these include Camp David (opened in 1917 as an Army training camp), Fort Snelling (opened in 1909 as an artillery post), and Ft. Meyer (opened in 1912 as an Infantry post). Additionally, there are two active Air Force Base locations within town: Wright-Patterson AFB and Minot AFB. In addition to all of this, numerous smaller units stationed throughout the state provide support for local police departments and other municipal services. The history of military deployments is reflective ofSt.Petersburg’s location on Lake Superior – one of the busiest shipping areas on Earth due to its many ports and docks used by ships coming into and out of Canada, Europe, America and Asia respectively. It was here that General Andrew Jackson ordered his army into battle against Native Americans at Hennepin County Battlefield on December 7th 1812; today’s Soldiers Field Museum is dedicated exclusively to this historical moment in our community’s history. As such, military deployment gifts have been a part of St.Petersburg culture for centuries – from soldiers who fought abroad to those who serve here at home! In World War II, General MacArthur ordered the activation of Reserve Division No 542 at Pier One near downtown St Paul on April 9th 1945 after Germany surrendered unconditionally three days earlier following Operation Overlord – one of the largest amphibious operations ever staged by American troops! This unit became known as “The Thunderbolts” because their armor allowed themto engage even German tanks not equipped with guns! After WWII ended however, many Minnesota National Guardsmen were drafted or loaned out back into service with various commands across America – including stints duty aboard vessels like USS Constitution (1865-1866) or USS Maine (1902-1904)! However it wasn’t until The Korean War that guard members truly got their name recognition outsideofMinnesota! During that war however, General MacArthur made another important decision which directly impacted our hometown: he decided not only did we need a garrison presence insideStPaul but more importantly we needed something which could be activated quickly should anything happen beyondour control! So upon orders from MacArthur Headquarters back east HQ USMC moved elements from Camp Roberts southwest towards Minneapolis under command Major General Harry Harris!! At first glance you might think this move was simply because Minneapolis had more population thanStPaul – but MacArthur knew exactly what he wanted done!! He wanted Marines ashore quick so they could take controlofthe city if necessary! This event led directly to Minneapolis becoming known as “America’sCity On The Waterfront”!!! And while you might think this moniker would continue until well after Korea ended– sadlynthe case was reversed!) Thus began what is now know as Marine Corps History Month!!! In 1947, the St. Paul City Council voted to establish a military reserve unit in the city. The unit was known as the "St. Paul Volunteer Firefighters Unit." The first members of the unit were firefighters from various departments in the city. In 1949, the volunteer fire department merged with the City of St. Paul's police department and became one department under Mayor John Henniker. In 1951, an amendment to the City Charter authorized a tax on properties within a two-mile radius of any public school for use in funding the creation of a military reserve unit in St.Paul. On July 1, 1952, six days after Governor Harold Wirths signed legislation authorizing formation of a military reserve unit in Minneapolis, Mayor John Henniker announced that his city would also form a military reserve unit and join forces with St Paul to become one providing mutual support for each other should hostilities break out between Minnesota and other states or nations. On August 11, 1952, Captain Harry Ladde became commanding officer of both units when he was appointed commander of Public Information Branch #2 at Camp Douglas Military Base outside Minneapolis

The city of St. Paul, Minnesota was founded in 1851 by Danish immigrants. The people of the town decided to name the city after Apostle Paul, who had spent many years traveling throughout the Midwest preaching Christianity and helping to spread the gospel. The first church in the town was built on a small parcel of land that is now part of downtown St. Paul. In 1856, Saint Paul became a separate county within Minnesota and was renamed from Minneapolis to honor Apostle Paul’s hometown. In 1905, St.Paul experienced its first major renovation when it was changed into an Americana-style city with ornate architecture and wide sidewalks. The city quickly became known as one of America’s most vibrant centers for culture and commerce during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In addition to its cultural attractions, St.Paul also played a significant role in shaping political life in Minnesota during this time period by becoming one of the largest cities in the state and playing host to both gubernatorial elections (1896 & 1904) as well as national conventions (1910 & 1912). Despite these successes, St.Paul experienced some setbacks during its golden age including two devastating fires that burned through much of downtown in 1916 and 1923 respectively; World War II which destroyed much infrastructure including several blocks of downtown;and a number of natural disasters such as Hurricane Agnes (1969), Superstorm Sandy (2011), and tornado outbreak #2 on October 22nd 2015 which caused extensive damage across parts of central Minneapolis
In 1854, St. Paul was founded as the capital of Minnesota Territory. In 1858, it became statehood and in 1865, it became the capital of Minnesota. The city experienced significant growth during the early days of its incorporation as a municipality. The population peaked at over 50,000 in 1870 and soon began to decline as new settlements were developed in what is now northeastern Minnesota. However, due to its location within a crossroads and its status as the state's financial center, St. Paul continued to grow rapidly throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century. By 1920, the population had reached more than 100,000 and by 1930 it had reached 150,000. Today, St. Paul is an important cultural and commercial center for Northeast Minnesota and has seen continuing growth throughout the 21st century
