The United States Army deployed gift history in St. Peter, Minnesota on November 12th, 1951. The deployment was the first time the army had deployed overseas and it involved the shipment of 1,500 items to Walter Cronkite's home in Tucson, Arizona. The unit fought its way through intense machine gun fire and reached their destination safely only minutes after starting their march. In 1918, the battalion was redesignated as the 1st Battalion Minnesota National Guard Infantry Regiment #5 and deployed to Belgium for service in World War I. They were stationed at Mons from November 1917-January 1918 before returning home on February 9th. During their time overseas, they earned several battle stars for heroism in action. Upon their return home, the battalion was disbanded on May 15th because of manpower shortages within the country during World War I.

The mission grew quickly and by 1862, it had a population of 350 people. In 1871, the newly organized United States Conference of Catholic Bishops appointed St. Peter as the first bishopric in what is now Minnesota. Bishop Peter's blessing helped Pioneer Settlement become one of America's most thriving agricultural communities. From here, he led his flock in preaching Christ's love and mercy to Native American villages and individuals throughout Minnesota and North Dakota until his death in 1886. The early history of St. Peters can be traced back to 1849 when Scandinavian missionaries came to preach Christianity among Indian tribes in what is nowMinnesota Territory (later called Dakota Territory). The name "SaintPeter" was given because one of these missionaries believed that Jesus would come soon to establish His kingdom on earth among humans. Consequently, this small settlement quickly became known as "Pioneer Settlement." Castleman County was established around this time and included much of present-dayMinnesota including Minneapolis and St Cloud; however, only Rochester Township was under missionary jurisdiction at that time. Bishop Peter arrived in Canada with his delegation from Minnesota on October 8,1871 for their trip across North America which lasted for two years (eventually reaching California). Upon his arrival back home on December 10th he blessed Pioneers settling near Dearborn Heights (nowSt Paul) with an assurance that they should live peaceful lives within the limits set for them by God Himself... ever vigilant against sinful desires inside themselves so as not to offend Him by any disobeying prohibitions He had instituted among men... These were some very anxious days! This accomplished blessing helped spur many farmers into enterprise while also satisfying those who desired more religious instruction than they could obtain from traders or missionaries living Amongst them... It was during this period that pioneer settlers began referring to themselves as "the Saints." After spending nearly 20 years pastoralizing Indians along the East Coast before coming Midwest en routetoMandan via Iowa & Wisconsin he died suddenly on October 26th 1886 at age 71 after being stricken down with a fever while preaching at Stillwater River Mission Chapel outside Great Falls MN
The first white settlers in this area were the brothers Peter and David McLaren. On July 8, 1854, they founded a small farm on what is now the corner of Minnesota Avenue and Indian Reserve Road. The McLarens named their farm St.Peter's Parish Township when it was organized in 1885. In 1906, the parish became a Roman Catholic church with its own pastor.
