Vadnais Heights is a census-designated place in Douglas County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Area. The name Vadnais Heights comes from the names of two men who were early settlers in this area: George Vadnais and Wm. Hays. The original town site was on an old farmstead between present-day Maplewood and Hopkinsville Roads. On July 10, 1856, the first post office called Vadnais Heights burned down; no one seems to have been injured as a result. A new post office was built at its current location on Maplewood Road in 1865, and it continued to be called that until it changed its name to Vadnais Heights in 1907. The first school in Vadnais Heights was established in 1870 by Drs. John Cramer and Leland Christensen with twelve students under their tuition program for girls only (later including boys). Another school opened in 1871 by Revs Jacob Hoffmeyer and Reinhold Niebuhr as a day care for children of farmers near Hopkinsville Road/present-day Snelling Avenue/Garland Boulevard. In 1875, Drs John Cramer and Elisha Meek opened a mental hospital at what is now 100th Street South which became known as Cedar Rapids State Hospital after they moved there from Iowa City, Iowa during the Panic of 1875 (Lydia Craig refers to this event as "The Great Sioux City Famine" which actually happened months earlier). After Cedar Rapids State Hospital closed in 1912 due to budget cuts by then Governor David Dixon, patients living near First Baptist Church on Third Street began using the building for storage until 1910 when it became available for use again as a church parish hall until it finally closed completely within fifteen years due to rotunda problems). Finally reopening as "First Methodist Episcopal Church" within five years following its closure made it possible for that structure still standing today across from Interstate 94 just south of downtown Minneapolis (itself one of many buildings located east of I-94 that were destroyed or abandoned over time)). In 1902 Wm Hays donated land southwest of his home on Fairview Drive/present-day Elmhurst Avenue for educational purposes so that citizens could learn about agriculture; this property eventually became Central High School where students currently attend grades 9 through 12 alongside other high schools located nearby such as Lyndale Hills Charter Academy and Park Nicollet Jr./Sr., along with several smaller vocational schools across centralMinnesota (). Though intended primarily for boys only until 1924 when girls were admitted into grades 8 through 12 followed suit (), Central High School eventually became coeducational (). One notable alumni who attended Central High School during these years include actor Kevin Bacon (); however male alumni continue to attend local universities such as University of Minnesota Twin Cities and St Cloud State University while female alumni increasingly attend Centenary College located just east of downtown Minneapolis.). On November 15, 1923 William Moyer married Evelyn Kelley at First Methodist Episcopal Church; their union produced six children: William Moyer III (born 1951), Kathleen Moyer (born 1954), Barry Moyer (born 1957), Darlene Moyer(born 1959), Suzanne Coyner(born 1961)and Linda Moyer(born 1965). Reverend Hoyt later served assistant pastor at Central High School before becoming Assistant Superintendent for Schools District 7 southeast suburban Saint Paul where he continues today as superintendent responsible for all public education within that district including charter schools ). In 1976 Evelyn died suddenly after giving birth to her sonogram image which she had been keeping hidden since they’d found out she had cancerringtoned back four weeks earlier – her death marked the end not onlyof her husband’s ministry but alsoof any formal education opportunitiesfor his six kids)).
