Waconia is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Waconia County. The population was 7,816 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Wabasha River, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Minneapolis and 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of St. Paul. The city was founded in 1879 by Danish immigrants as Wahona, renamed after nearby Wadena City in 1881, and then Waconia in 1889. The name "Waconia" comes from the Dakota language meaning "roads leading to or from water." In 1916, Waconia became a town when it annexed neighboring Maplewood Township. The town's population increased to 10,000 people by 1940 but declined to 6,500 by 1990 due to suburbanization and other economic problems. In 2000, the city voted to become an independent municipality once again under its own government ordinance subject only to the authority of the Minnesota Legislature for local purposes only until 2025; however it has not yet done so. The current mayor is Donny Schmidt with Council members Larry Jenkinson (1st Ward), Chuck Weiland (2nd Ward), Dan Helmerich (3rd Ward), Rick Smith (4th Ward), Laura Nesbitt-Harding(5th Ward) and Randy Hendrickson (6th Ward).

It is located on the southern edge of Ramsey County, on the banks of the Saint John River. The town was founded by Danish immigrants in 1855 as a farming community named Forks over the river. The name change to Waconia after a local stream (Wacoon) became known for being clear enough to see from a distance what crops were being grown there. In 1885, Waconia became one of thirty townships in Ramsey County; it remained an unincorporated township until 1959 when it incorporated as a city under its own charter. In 1954, Waconia was chosen as site for the national headquarters for NORAD, which then moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1957; but NORAD returned to Minneapolis in 1961 and continues today primarily with air-defense purposes within its Wright-Patterson Air Force Base complex there.
