White Bear Lake is a reservoir on the White Bear River in Minnesota. It was created by damming the White Bear River and it forms part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The lake has a surface area of , with a maximum depth of . It contains a number of salt lakes, including two named after former United States presidents, George Washington and James K. Polk. The lake also has several smaller reservoirs and ponds. The first mention of WhiteBearLake was in 1854, when an Indian hunter reported seeing "a great white bear" at the mouth of the river. Over time, other reports mentioned animals such as elk, deer, raccoon, otter, beaver, muskrat, and porcupine. In 1861 an act to create the Sioux Nation reserved property around WhiteBearLake for their use. That same year work began on building what would become known as Capitol Hill Dam (later renamed Dakota Dam). The dam was completed in 1865 and became one of the most important projects in Minnesota history. WhiteBearLake has been used for fishing ever since it was formed from land that had been used for hunting by Native Americans. At first there were only some small streams that could provide bait but over time more dams were built to add more water to WhitebearLake while also creating larger reservoirs that can still be visited today. Today fishing is very popular due to many different types of fish available including bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie/pike/plankton netting), walleye/cod (white), carp (black), rainbow trout (silver)and browns (muddy). Some people even use flyfishing gear which includes artificial lures made specifically for this sport!
