The Air Force deployed gift history in Worthington, Minnesota in 1951. The AF activated the 5th Airlift Squadron on July 1, 1951 and placed it under the command of the 9th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB. With this activation, the 5AS became a unit of the 9AW. In 1952, an auxiliary squadron was activated to provide airlift for military exercises in northern Minnesota. This squadron was made up of civilian pilots and flew Boeing 707s from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. In 1954, when the wing's mission changed from transportation to intelligence gathering and support activities within NATO, Headquarters USAF transferred operational jurisdiction to Headquarters Ninth Air Force (HN9AF). As a result, 5AS became part of HN9AF as well. The wing continued providing transport services through 1974 when its last Boeing 727 was retired from service and all transports were replaced by C-130A/B aircraft. The company delivered three P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes to the city of Worthington as a Christmas present for its citizens and military personnel stationed there.
Worthington, Minnesota is a small town located in the northwest corner of Minnesota. The population was only 1,471 at the 2000 census, however it has since grown to over 6,000 people. The town is named after General James Worthington who fought in the American Revolution and who later became a governor of Minnesota. Worthington was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad. The first settlers in Worthington were farmers who moved from Iowa in 1881. They built a log cabin and started a small grocery store. By 1886, the farmers had developed some farmland which they used to raised chickens and pigs. In 1907, two men named Hickey bought land in Worthington from the farmer John Macdonald for $1 per acre. They began to build a large ranch house which remains standing today. This event helped start what would become one of Worthington’s most important industries- agriculture. After World War II, there was an increase in migration to what is now Worthington because of new jobs available in industry and agriculture. Today, many businesses are still based here including First National Bank (the oldest bank west of the Mississippi), United Way of Greater Minneapolis/St Paul, Stearns County Agricultural Society ( grows crops and sells livestock), Lowes Hardware chain store (founded by Walmart), and Dairy Queen ( founded by Wawa). Today's economy is based largely on services such as health care, education, retail sales and manufacturing but there are also several agricultural businesses that continue to play an important role including: Alpha Natural Foods Co., Inc., Landmark Nursery & Garden Supply Co., Inc., Swanson Bros./Lopez Farms Inc., Kruger Brothers Farms LLC., Pioneer Natural Resources Company

The town is named after the Worthington family who were prominent landowners in the area at the time of its establishment. The first settlers to Worthington arrived in 1856, and it was formally incorporated as a village on February 16, 1865. In 1870, Worthington became a township and remained that way until it was renamed as Worthington Township on November 3, 1909. The township had an overall population of 2,811 residents when it changed its name again to Worthington Village on June 4, 1916. As of 2010, the total population of Worthington is 10,633 residents. Worthington has been through many different periods throughout its history; some of which have seen drastic changes within the local community while others have been more gradual but still significant. One such period that saw significant change occurred during World War II when the town experienced great turmoil due to several bombings that took place within its boundaries. During this time period, many people left WorTHINGTON for various reasons including fear for their safety and because they felt that their homes were never safe from attack again. Afterward, many new families began moving into what had once been known as "theBombingtown." Another significant moment in WorTHINGTON's history came during the late 1960s when Ramsey County faced budget cuts due to inflationary pressures within society at large. This led to numerous layoffs in the local government sector which greatly impacted businesses and individuals within the community; however, despite these challenges%, WORTHINGTON continued to thrive and grow throughout this time frame despite some difficult times. Worthington was founded in 1854 by General James Worthington and his wife, Abigail. The town was named after the nearby village of Worthington, England. By 1880, Worthington had a population of about 350 people. In 1905, the townpost office was moved from its original location on First Street to a new building on Second Avenue. In 1951, Worthington became a city and in 1973 it annexed the neighboring town of Centerville.
