Although there were positive aspects to the colonization process for black Mississippians such as increased literacy rates and access to education, discrimination continued unabated throughout much of colonial times due to racism against Africans regardless of their social standing or economic opportunities. Blacks working off plantation slaves often found themselves at a disadvantage when it came time to get ahead in life because they could not own property or receive government benefits like voting rights or public transportation infrastructure like roads and bridges necessary for white citizensfolk's everyday lives. Confederate soldiers plundering Union homes during Reconstruction further exacerbated these disparities by denying blacks equal access to civil rights and basic human needs such as food stamps and education assistance which helped rebuild the state following Reconstruction (Lopez). Additionally, lack of jobs opportunities combined with high rates of illiteracy led more black Mississippians into poverty than into middle classhood beginning in the early 20th century (Baker). Despite these challenges posed by race during colonial times period Mississippi achieved some successful strides including becoming one of America's most diverse states with nearly 100% African American residents by 1990 (Kameny). These successes are largely attributable to efforts by activists such as educator Ebony Elizabeth Thomas who fought tirelessly for racial justice during this time period (Thomas). Today Mississippi continues its quest towards being a "nation where all are valued" through programs like #Black Lives Matter which calls attention to systematic racism both statewide and nationwide (Goudreau-Smith).
