Gun gift history in Madison, Mississippi began with the purchase of a rifle by John Wesley Hardin on December 15, 1836. The rifle was used to shoot at a local hunt and was later donated to the city of Madison by Hardin. On July 6, 1861, the first gun purchase in Madison was made by Jesse Hill from James Witherspoon. The handgun Purchase Act of 18 May 1862 provided for the regulation of firearms and authorized purchases of arms by citizens who could demonstrate an interest in using them for lawful purposes. A total of 414 guns were purchased in Madison during 1862, including 102 handguns. On February 5, 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell called for all southern states to arm themselves against Union forces and proposed that Alabama arm itself. This proposal caused great concern as it would give northern units an edge over Confederate troops in battle. Many people withinMadison voted not to arms themselves because they believed that such action would lead to war with the United States. Ultimately, Governor William Ladd vetoed Ewell’s proposal and there did not appear to be any future plans for arming Mississippians

Madison was founded in 1821 by James K. Polk and is a town in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is located on the western bank of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles (30 km) south of Jackson and 40 miles (60 km) north of Memphis. In 1819, John Cranch settled a farm on the east side of Madison River, which he named for his father-in-law, James K. Polk Sr., who had represented Tennessee in the United States Congress from 1812 to 1818. In 1830, as part of an effort torosize Native American lands west of the river, General Andrew Jackson seized control of much of what is now Mississippi County and named it Jackson County after himself and also granted land to several families that became resident therein - including those who later founded Madison - including James K., John Cranch's son William H., Jr., and their brother Robert Prentice. In 1836, when Andrew Johnson was elected president along with Jefferson Davis as vice president on account of his successful reelection campaign against Martin Van Buren, Johnson made Madison one of his key stops during his tour across America promoting his policies as assistant secretary at war under Van Buren. The townspeople donated $1 million towards building a new courthouse which was completed in 1840; called "The White House" because its cornerstone had been brought down from Washington D.C.'s The White House Complex just prior to its dedication, this structure served as both court house and presidential mansion until 1908 when it was replaced by the morerecently constructed Capitol Building in downtownJackson

Madison, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Madison was made in 1848 by John White and his family. The town was named after James Kapp of Cincinnati, Ohio who donated land to make it a municipality. The first mayor of Madison was James Coker and the first postmaster was Elijah Bond. In 1865, an act of Congress created Hinds County and included Madison in it. The first courthouse in Madison was built on State Route 9 near present day Lumberton Boulevard. In 1872, the citizens of Madison voted to change their name to Meridianville because they thought that it would be more likely to be accepted by other towns in Hinds County than Jackson which had been called Meridian since before the turn of the century. At that time, there were only a few settlements in Hinds County other than Jackson and Meridianville had no connection with either city other than location or commerce. In 1916–17 when Mississippi statehood came about – as part of process known as Reconstruction – Meridianville became one of four county seats for Hinds County along withJackson (the others being Pascagoula and Carthage). Meridianville remained one seat until 1930 when it became an all-white township without representation from any minority groups outside white communities within its borders despite efforts by some residents to become involved in African American affairs through activities such as voter registration or church attendance. After years of striving by some residents - including future Mayor Willie Brown Sr., father-in-law of then Governor Edwin Edwards - following de facto segregation laws enacted during World War II ended black Mississippians were finally allowed full access to public education opportunities starting with high school graduation requirement beginning with Carver High School followed by local academies/universities like Tuskegee Normal University while white students continued attending segregated schools until graduation although prospects for doing so improved once again starting with desegregation efforts initiated during Edward's administration culminating with integration plans announced during his last year as governor effective 1966; however Airmail flight rules at that time prevented Negroes from traveling away from home except for necessary business meetings; this left many rural Black Mississippians without opportunity for education commencing early middle childhood through college level; this lack educational opportunities has contributed greatlyto large percentage poverty rates among Black Mississippians today nearly 60% lives below poverty line cotton farming families have high levels Of illiteracy & most adult males& females have very low levels Of schooling
