Moss Point is a small town in Jackson, Mississippi. It was founded in 1892 by settlers from Illinois. Today, Moss Point is a bedroom community for the Jackson metropolitan area. The population of Moss Point was 9,165 as of the 2010 census. The town was named after General James K. Polk and his family who settled there in 1848. After making a Donation to the Methodist Episcopal Church at Moss Point, General Polk became its first pastor and namesake for the settlement which he named for his mother's birthplace on the Ohio River in Kentucky – also called "Moss-Gowee." In 1892, when white men first began arriving in what is now Jackson County, they built a log cabin on an island near the intersection of State Road 49 and Fishing Creek (later known as US Highway 98). From this point forward, until 1915 when Brown Plantation was established adjacent to present day Moss Point east of US Highway 95A/US Highway 19B), all development took place along State Road 49 between Fisher creek and Browns Landing where today's bridges over both creeks connect with downtownJacksonville. In 1915 Brown Plantation closed down due to lack of business opportunities; however some families still continued to live there until it burned down around 1978. Since then moss point has slowly begun to recover with many new businesses starting up such as Thirsty Joe's sports bar & Grill, Big John's Pizza and Donny & Marie's café which opened in 2007 just off I-565 north of town limits

In 1831, President Andrew Jackson ordered the federal government to provide land for slaves in Mississippi and Moss Point became one of the initial slave communities in the state. The town continued to grow throughout the 1840s and 1850s as more people moved into the area from other parts of Mississippi. By 1860, Moss Point had a population of around 1,600 residents and it remained an important cotton-growing community until after the Civil War.
