Belton, Missouri is a small town in the except of St. Francois County, Missouri. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Belton was founded on October 15, 1836 by John Belton and his brothers David and Amos Belton. The original site of Belton was about three miles east of present-day downtown Belton. The land for the town was donated by John's father-in-law, Cornelius Dickey. The first post office in Belton was established on October 15, 1836, and remained in operation until it closed on January 1, 1840. There were six mail carriers serving Belton at that time: William Brougham (from December 17th to February 3rd), James Latham (December 17th to February 3rd), Samuel Morse (January 1st to April 6th), Ebenezer Farnsworth (from May 10th to July 8th). BelTON had its own school system which operated from 1839 until it merged with neighboring towns in 1907. In 1908 Grover Cleveland became President of America and scheduled a day for Thanksgiving vacation during which he spend his honeymoon at a hotel near Omaha while visiting friends and family in Missouri; due to this event many people from Missouri came into contact with Mr. Cleveland and some actually moved back home permanently after their holiday visit! # history # belting out

After being annexed by St. Louis in 1871, Belton became part of that city's black community. In 1948, after the integration of St. Louis County, Belton reverted to its white population while still administered by St. Louis City Council members from black households only.
