The history of the navy in Carthage, Missouri dates back to 1853. The first Naval Base was established at Fort Kearney in that year. The United States Navy's first ship to be commissioned in the city was USS Constitution on October 26, 1853. In 1860, the navy moved its headquarters from Fort Kearney to a new facility on Blair Street. From 1861-1865, the navy operated three warships under command of Captain Samuel J. Butler at Carthage: USS Maine (1861), USS Constitution (1862), and USS Alabama (1863). In 1865, Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, ending the American Civil War. As a result of this event, all naval activity in Missouri ceased immediately. However, because Carthage had been part of Confederate General Robert Ewing's command during the war and because it had been Yankee shelling throughout most of that conflict, many buildings associated with navy operations still stand today within blocks of each other dating back to that era - including old arsenal buildings on Second Street and Broadway and stately courthouse complexes on Third and Fourth Streets. Since then there have been several attempts by various groups to revive or redevelop aspects of what was once known as "the navy town." No success has yet been achieved despite more than $160 million spent over 10 years by various groups trying to turn what is essentially an industrial park into something resembling a downtown business district for area residents and visitors alike - much like one would find in cities such as Boston or New York City. Despite all these efforts however, some historians feel that Carthage may actually possess some real historical treasures buried beneath its surface which may finally lead to its rebirth as a vibrant community center for sailors and their families after centuries away from those who live there today...

It was founded by Germans in 1809 and named for Carthage in Tunisia. The city is located on the confluence of the Platte River and Brushy Creek within the Ozark Mountains National Park. There are numerous hiking trails accessible from downtown Carthage as well as national forests located nearby including Ozark National Forest and Jefferson National Forest.
