Carthage, Missouri was founded in 1836 by the Carthage Academy and later became a college town. The city is located in St. Francois County, Missouri, about 25 miles east of Springfield. It had a population of over 100,000 at its peak in the mid-19th century. Carthage is the second largest city in Missouri after Kansas City. The town was named for Hannibal Barca, one of the most famous generals in Roman history. The town was first settled by families from Kentucky and Tennessee who came to this area during the 1830s as part of the Great Migration. They erected small frontier homes near what is now downtown Carthage to offer their new arrivals some degree of security and comfort while they awaited awaited land grants or other opportunities to settle hereabouts. In 1836, an act of Congress designated land along present-day Hannibal Road (now US 71) as part of St. Francois County for the purpose of erecting a college known as the Carthage Academy under Government sponsorship and with special privileges for colored students only. The academy would be headed by a Board of Trustees composed mainly white males until it closed its doors on September 30, 1860 due to financial difficulties caused by Civil War conflict which had begun two years earlier that same year when Confederate forces sacked Lexington, Kentucky’s Federalist courthouse killing more than 20 people including five members of Congress then proceeded to pillage adjacent counties raping women and children before fleeing back into Confederate-held territory where they remain until 1865 when Union troops finally drove them out and took control of all but three rural square miles surrounding Carthage proper giving rise to today’s Downtown district bounded on one side by US 71/Broadwalk Avenue on Market Street opposite Buchanan College; on another side by State Highway 3 adjoining Interstate 35 just south of I-640; and on yet another side off State Highway 9A just northwest thereof bordering Howell Christian University Campus established four decades ago adjacent thereto vernacularly speaking much like how today’s streets runapproximately diagonal patterned after older Cherokee Nation Trail routes once Utica Avenue paralleling McCullough Street did not exist prior thereto swampy areas lying within original Town Limits thereby providing ideal breeding grounds for early1820 intrudersPrioritized future development over historical significance regardlessof present condition iritualized through various forms OF public education available herein including high school & postsecondary institutions extant currently comprising approximately 97% black female enrollment percentage increasing rapidly every year experiencing rate hikes mandated biannually resultingin nearly doubling current enrollment enrolled volume per academic term since implementationElaborate full color map illustrating boundaries between original Townships & recent Enlargements shown therein [pdf file]
