The Chesterfield Coast Guard Station was founded in 1917. The station is the only Coast Guard station in Missouri. The station has a helicopter and two boats. It also has a service dog program for the disabled. In 2006, the Coast Guard Station awarded a gift to the community of Chesterfield for its 100th birthday. It features an octagon-shaped portico and two square towers. The station was used as a Coast Guard depot until it closed in 1969. It has been used as a storage facility since then.
Chesterfield is a small town in northwestern Missouri, United States. The population was 5,651 at the 2010 census. Chesterfield is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Chesterfield were farmers who arrived in 1829. By 1840, there were five families living in the community. In 1847, Captain John Aiken settled in what is now Chesterfield and named it after his home county of Hampshire, England. In 1868, a post office was established at Chesterfield and remained open until 1907. In 1865, Stonington Township was organized and became one of the townships within Kansas City County; however, according to the US Census Bureau, it ceased to exist as an independent municipality on April 15, 1907. It lies along Raccoon Creek between Interstate 40 east of downtown Springfield and I-70 west of town center; however downtown does not lie on Raccoon Creek but across its course near Elk Grove Village on Illinois Route 53B (the old route 65).
