The name of the town derives from "Chesterfield Township", which was organized in 1831. The first coffee beans were grown in this area by James and David Brown in 1855. Chesterfield is a small town in the Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Chesterfield was Isaac Dunham in 1822. The town was platted on May 15, 1838, by John A. Brown and James M. Hightower. The name honors Chesterfield Township's founder, General Philip Sheridan (1797-1845), who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war and as a delegate to the peace talks at San Francisco. The post office opened in 1839 and remained open until it closed on September 25, 1955. The settlers built their homes near what is now Lancaster Avenue and High Street; these are still standing today along with a few others from when the town grew rapidly around its railroad station which became an important commercial center for farmers and other businesses during the mid 1800s In 1850, $5 million had been invested by Nicholas Merrill in Waterloo Railroad expansion which included Cheshire (now Oxford) Branch line construction that started up north of Chesterfield; this led to rapid growth of business within walking distance of Merchants Row station including stores such as Grosse Pointe Woolen Mills #2 which opened in 1865 By 1870 there were over 100 businesses located between Lancaster Avenue/High Street and Merchant Row Station with a total payroll valued at $10 million In 1880 an addition track was added allowing trains to run through town making it even more busy with 300 residents employed out of 350 total residents at that time according to one report However due to monetary factors unrelated to railroads industry nonresidential development began taking hold such as schools being built which would bring people into town for day trips or weekend visits . This eventually lead to so much economic activity that by 1916 only 5% of all retail sales took place within walking distance from Merchants Row station while services such as grocery store operated beyond its original boundaries

The Chesterfield area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans to visit the area were French explorers in the 16th century. In 1819, General James Wilkinson named the place Chesterfield after his home town of Chesterfield in England. The early settlers were farmers and their families. By 1870, most of the original settlers had left for other parts of Missouri. A small group of men from Illinois settled in the community in 1871. They developed a farmstead and built a school house there. In 1875, a post office was established at Chesterfield and mail was carried using country roads to Springfield. The first telephone line was installed in the community in 1907. The population of Chesterfield increased rapidly during World War II because many local businesses turned out to be involved with war production such as shipbuilding and munitions manufacturing. After 1945, however, growth slowed due to declines in industry and job opportunities throughout Missouri. Today, Chesterfield is an agricultural community with a few limited commercial activities including agriculture and fishing

By 1970s- 1980s (most recently), Chesterfield had largely declined as an agricultural center due to changes in technology and market trends. However, it has managed to preserve some of its historic architecture such as the original cotton gin building
