Creve Coeur, Missouri is a town located in the Ozarks of western Missouri. The population was 10,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Biddle and his wife Elizabeth. Creve Coeur is named after the French village of Courchevel which was located nearby on the Osage River. The first European to visit Creve Coeur was a party led by Pierre Laclède in 1764. A small community developed around Battle Creek on the edge of present-day Creve Coeur due to its strategic location as a crossing point for trade with Canada and Illinois. In 1836, Nicholas Biddle purchased 640 acres (2 km²) in what is now downtown Creve Coeur from John Pendergrast. He named his new town after Courchevel, France where he had spent time during his honeymoon with Elizabeth Biddle prior to their marriage in 1824. Biddle's original store and home were destroyed by fire on July 5, 1840 while he slept near the site today known as Main Street; however, this did not stop him from rebuilding soon afterwards and expanding his business into other areas such as blacksmithing and grocery sales/transportation services. By 1850, Biddle had built several churches including one completed in 1852 which still stands today called First Baptist Church property line Drive side view). Creve Coeur was platted in 1859 and named for General James A. Creve who had served as a colonel in the Union army during the Mexican War. The first post office at Creve Coeur was established on November 12, 1859, by J. M. Crouch. The present post office was established on January 3, 1865, by Wm Fenton Burrell Jr.. The name of the town originated with General James A. Creve who had been assigned to lead an expedition against Confederate forces near here in 1846 while serving with the Union army under Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican War. General Creve is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in nearby Webster Groves (the original home of some of Springfield's earliest settlers). In 1881, local businessman John Dunkerly donated land to create what would become one of Missouri's most important shopping malls – Dunkerly Plaza – which today remains a major tourist attraction for locals and tourists alike thanks to its large variety of stores and restaurants including Macy's and Sears as well as more than 20 smaller businesses stretching from end to end of its two levels (a "bazaar" level that functions like a mall floor plan with several dozen small stores above it and an "open air" level housing six larger stores).
