Kirksville, Missouri is a town in Fulton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Kirksville is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and is home to the headquarters of American Express Company. The first people to live in what is now Kirksville were Native Americans. The area was first settled by European Americans in the 1840s as part of the Pea Ridge Purchase. In 1846, when Union General James H. Wilson decided to move his army from Corinth, Mississippi to defend Springfield against a Confederate attack, he ordered Colonel George A. Smith of the 6th Ulysses S. Grant's Army Corps to purchase land east of Kirksville and name it Pea Ridge after General William Tecumseh Sherman's old stomping ground in Illinois (Pea Ridge had been abandoned by Sherman because it was too swampy). Because slavery had not yet been abolished in Missouri when this transaction took place, both parties got their share of property - Smith got 160 acres (the present-day city limits) and Henry Clay Frick received 10 acres (the present-day village limits). In 1854, James Fenton established a sawmill on 200 acres (8 km2) near what is now downtown Kirksville; his mill continued until 1907 under various names including Cottonland Mill and Centennial Mills before becoming known as Fenton Paper Products Company Ltd., which still operates it today as a subsidiary of JCPenney Corporation. In 1865 an important railroad junction called Big Springs became available due to construction by engineer George Stephenson on the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway between Topeka and Santa Fe Junction; local residents built a school house at Big Springs for instruction leading up to passenger train service through that station which started on November 22nd 1870 with four cars carrying 20 passengers each way between Topeka and Independence; services continued until May 3rd 1893 when they were discontinued due to budget cuts by then-Governor Charles Evans Hughes who argued that railways would be more efficient if freight traffic did not stop at Big Springs since goods could be unloaded there and transported directly into KCMO or Kansas City rather than having travelers have to go through St Joseph or Independence In 1875 businessman Hiram Latham organized a group of farmers who named themselves "The Farmers' Alliance" in order to resist offers from railroads for permission to build tracks through their land directly south of their settlement; this led eventuallyto formation of The Southern Pacific Railroad company with its original mainline running from KSMO via Wichita Falls/Big Spring all the way down into TXL El Paso where it crossed over into Mexican territory before continuing west along what are now US-Mexico borders en route founding Pecos New Mexico junctures along its route This early effort atfreight transportation helped spur economic development around KirksVILLE while also helping form some familiar face(s) within today's community – such as Henry Clay Frick who later became one portion ownerof JCPenney Corporation On July 2nd 1880 two large storms hit southern MO – one causing widespread destruction across much of Fulton County destroying homes, churches etc.; damage estimates ran anywhere from $3 million-$30 million resulting primarily from windblown branches accountinng for well over 90%+of total losses With little alternative but closure OF THE RAILROAD IN SOUTHERN MISSOURI THIS LEFT MUCH OF THE VALLEY VICTIMIZED ; KIRKSVILLE WERE BORN WITH IT Flooding following these events destroyed many farms upstream which forced relocation & resettlement among numerous other families residing just outside flood zones . Kirksville, Missouri is a town located in Webster County, Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,584. The first settler in Kirksville was John Kirks who arrived in 1836. The name honors General James Kirkpatrick who fought at Battle of San Jacinto and later became United States Senator from Texas. The community was founded by Daniel Boone in 1799 as a small trading post on the Arkansas River. In 1811, a group of settlers led by Captain David Dixon founded what would become Kirksville on land that they had acquired from the Osage Nation. The first stores were built here and early residents engaged in agriculture and cattle ranching until the arrival of railroads made it possible to sell goods far into Mexico. During World War II, Kirksville played an important role as a munitions plant supplying General George Patton's army with ammunition for his drive through France and Belgium. The plant closed after the war but portions remain extant today as part of the Clinton Presidential Library & Museum complex.
Kirksville was founded by Isaac Kirks in 1836. The community grew rapidly and by 1840, it had a school, post office, and two churches. In 1845, the town was renamed for General John Custer after his death in battle. Kirksville became an important manufacturing center during the years following World War II due to its production of military vehicles and munitions. However, since the late 2000s, the city has seen significant decline as a result of population loss and economic stagnation.
