Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,282 at the 2010 census. The community is part of the Springfield- Carroll Township micropolitan area. It was platted in 1872. The Kirkwood post office served the community from 1872 to 1967. The first store in Kirkwood was built by J.M. Richardson and operated for three years before being closed down due to financial difficulties. In 1876, G W Kirby opened a general store and prospered until his death in 1903. A year later, P H Post opened a grocery store which lasted for over 60 years until it too closed down in 1978 due to economic problems including high competition from neighboring towns with larger stores that had been open much longer than Post's business did. One of Kirkwood's most notable entrepreneurs was S M Slaughter who started an oil refinery on the north side of town in 1902 which became one of the largest petroleum refineries west of St Louis until it went out of business in 1986 due to environmental concerns related to its activities near Kirksville National Wildlife Refuge. In 1916, P C Kapp established what is now called Kapp's Bakery & Cafe as the first commercial bakery operation west of Kansas City after moving from his native Chicago where he had founded two other successful bakeries during his career as an entrepreneur and teacher preceding that time (the second being located at 54th Street and State Route 611 east of downtown Kansas City). A major event occurred on October 14th th , 1921 when a tornado touched down just east of town damaging or destroying several homes and killing five people: four farmers living on a large farmstead about three miles east-northeast of town; Mrs John Hockaday (wife of Dr John Hockaday), their six children ages 9 through 17; Mrs Harry Fenton (widower of Mr Charles Fenton), their son age 8; her brother-in-law George Easley; all were killed while working outside when the storm struck just after dark local time following heavy rains that evening subsequent to unusual warm weather conditions prevailing throughout much central Missouri especially northeastward into Tuesday night hours ahead resulting some reports experiencing very heavy wind gusts up to 100 mph accompanied by widespread destruction across most sections affected with roofs off frame homes stripped off trees limbs snapped off power lines downed trees left lying across streets Nemur Rd NW approximately 2 1/2 miles southeast corner Jameson Rd NEapproximately 4 miles northeast Barbour Rd SEabout 7 1/2 miles southwest Of course there were many more unmentioned fatalities but these are typically given greater attention because they occurred within close proximity or inside buildings impacted thereby leaving behind extensive damage particularly around rooflines howeversome windows were smashed even though no direct impact could be seen besides some broken branches which stood 10 feet tall or higher giving this tornado some impressive destructive power also note that despite all efforts by firefighters several residences northwest along Nemur Road almost opposite Jameson Road failed completely destroyed by twister having Sheetrock covering both upper levels only accessible from top floor where fire broke out well above ground level suggesting either stray sparks resulted from electrical wires coming through sheetrock or water leaked underneath caused minor injury if any at all since these residences are attached directly above ground level yet still suffered complete destruction nonetheless this tragedy remains oneofthestmysteriesofaterrorismstillopentothisdaywasiteverexplained

Kirkwood, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Kirkwood was John Kirkwood, who came to the area in 1828. He built a cabin on the west side of the creek that flows through Kirkwood into Indian Creek. In 1830, he married Catharine Goodspeed and they moved to what is now east of the town on land that he donated to the community. In 1835, James Hays donated an acre (0.40 hectare) of land in what is now east of town for use as a public square and school ground. The Hays family lived in Kirkwood until their death in 1893. In 1858, Jesse Gentry purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 kilometer) north of where current day Highway K follows his route from Indian Creek to his farmstead near present day Cemetery Road and then down Cemetery Valley Road to Highway K; this land became known as Gentry Prairie after him and it remains property of the Gentry family today. In 1861-1862, Abraham Lincoln served as Postmaster at Kirkwood with Wm Auld serving as Assistant Postmaster On July 10th 1870 residents voted 3-1 not to annex any other towns within Jackson County while discussing annexation proposals from nearby communities including Villa Park (later Independence), Florissant Heights ( later Ferguson), Hazelton Heights ( later Ozark City), and Maple Lawns (later would become Kirksville). This vote represented an important milestone because it signaled that residents did not want to be absorbed into larger municipalities; instead they desired their own community hall and school district which would eventually form when all six neighborhoods were annexed by St Louis during 1920-1923 due to budget shortages caused by World War I
