Lake St. Louis, Missouri is a city in and the county seat of St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was $128 million as of 2010, making it the most populous city in St. Louis County. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America and home to a large African American population. The area that now makes up Lake St.Louis was first settled by Native Americans about 12,000 years ago. The first European to see the area was Jacques Marquette in 1673 when he explored what is now Illinois Country and reported back to France about his findings. In 1764 French fur traders founded a trading post on the present-day site of downtown St. Louis named Jardin des Plantes after Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, an explorer who had discovered new land between Louisiana and Mississippi River in 1692–93 for France. In 1812 Captain John Jacob Astor bought 7 miles (11 km) of land at what is now Downtown Saint Louis from a group of French Canadians who were expelled from Canada for supporting American independence during the War of 1812. In 1821 violence broke out between white settlers and Native Americans near what is today Downtown Saint Louis over control of plots of land close to Lake Michigan; this led to what are known as "The Great Sioux War". After three days intense fighting over several thousand acres (1 hectares), whites emerged victorious with some dead and many injuries; however, more than two hundred Indian men and women were killed or captured including future president James Kieft (1795–1872). In 1830 Orleans Parish was created from parts of Jefferson County; part of Orleans City would be added later that year when Jefferson Township became Orleans Parish boundaries within Jackson County following New Madrid Faultline earthquake events on July 6th & 7th 1830 which followed an 8 mile wide (~2 km deep) fault zone delineated by movement along faults trending WNW-SSE-ENE arousal along strike 13°30′ N latitude and depth 1027 feet (~268 m). This event began an extended sequence which includes numerous earthquakes throughout much southern Missouri until today's day including:On July 15th 1850 at 9:37 pm CDT Napa County magnitude 3+ local failure epicenter located just south side Redwood Valley Rd off US Highway 66 about 5 miles SE Napa Co Sheriff Department Campground Redwood Springs Rd off I-435 exit 43 northbound then drive east on I-435 until you reach US Highway 66 approximately 10 miles SE Napa Co about 1/4 mile east sideRedwood Valley Rd off US Hwy 66
