The army passed through Union Township on its way south but did not reach Lake St. Louis until after dark on July 4th because they had been delayed by bad weather at Poplar Bluff (now Springfield). In 1814 steamboats reached the mouth of the river and began operating as shipping lanes between points east and west of town; this increased trade around town as goods became available at lower prices because transportation costs were higher along railroads that followed either side of the river. In 1818 Congress authorized construction of a canal across Missouri to improve trade with Illinois; construction began two years later but stopped due to financial difficulties (). By 1825 navigation through Lake St. Louis had resumed operation thanks largely to safe harbors along both sides of the river created by fortifications built there during that time (). One reason for declined trade around town was an increase in railroad traffic along both sides of Interstate 55 which connected Chicago withDecatur Junction on I-55 north and Kansas City with East Jefferson Junction on I-55 south - making it much easier for goods exported from those areas into western Missouri without having to go all the way downriver via lake or bridge
