The Naval History and Heritage Command’s Maryland Heights, Missouri Museum has a rich history of military deployment gift history in the city. The museum is dedicated to serving as a repository for naval history and heritage in the area. It was established in 1984 as part of the Naval Historical Center District of St. Louis, MO. In 1992, it moved to its current location on Commerce Hill in Maryland Heights. The museum has a collection of over 5,000 items from Navy deployments throughout the years. These include equipment, supplies, memorabilia, and artifacts from both World War II and the Vietnam War. Maryland Heights, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of north-central Missouri. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the present-day city of Springfield. The area now known as Maryland Heights was first settled by Germans in 1836. In 1872, John M. Brown and his family moved to what was then known as Maryland Heights from Illinois. They built a house on the edge of downtown that remains standing today as one of Springfield's most important landmarks. Montgomery County was organized in 1821, and named for George Washington Montgomery. The county seat of Montgomery County was at Shrewsbury, but the town of Bethesda started to form around 1800. In 1834, the United States Congress passed a bill designating Montgomery County as the “Jewish Territorial Territory” because of its large number of Jews living in Pennsylvania. The first synagogue built in Maryland Heights was called Congregation Bet Tzedek (Our Father's Chapel) and it opened its doors on October 15th, 1868. It is said that over 400 people attended services that day. Today, Congregation Bet Tzedek offers prayer meetings, shabbat services and educational opportunities for children and adults. In 1898, Baltimore Orioles pitcher John Littlejohn played for the team in a game against the Montreal Expos at Memorial Stadium in Maryland Heights. Afterward, Littlejohn donated $5000 to help build what is now Oriole Park At Camden Yards. The park has been home to many different teams over the years including the Orioles, Phillies and Braves. The population of Maryland Heights increased rapidly during World War II due to military housing developments located there such as Fort Meade National Military Park and Camp Humphreys which housed up to 30 000 soldiers during World War II. As a result of this growth, businesses and residences moved away from Maryland Heights towards Johns Hopkins University/Washington Blvd., UMD/Red Line Station Area east side neighborhoods such as Kensington Market/Easton Village or even into nearby counties such as Prince George's or Anne Arundel Counties while still retaining many properties within Marshalltown Road area near Johns Hopkins University where much development since then took place including: Research Triangle Park; Peirce Point; Light Street Plaza; NorthPark Place; etc... Today there are few if any traces remaining of original homes from pre-war days when MDH had more than 10 000 residents!
The community of Maryland Heights, Missouri was settled in the 1840s. In 1851, the first school in the community was opened. The town became a railroad junction in 1865 and experienced growth until the early 1900s. Growth stopped after World War II and Maryland Heights declined into poverty until the late 1990s.
