The Missouri Air National Guard was activated on December 7, 1912 as a result of the Spanish-American War. The unit was redesignated the Missouri Air Force on February 14, 1947. The Missouri Air National Guard's first deployment to Southeast Asia occurred in support of Operation Market Time which was conducted between September and October 1951. Through the years, the Missouri Air National Guard has deployments to many different countries including: Korea, Panama Canal Zone, Dominican Republic (Cuba), Somalia (Operation Neptune’s Spear), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Operation Joint Vigilance), Haiti (Operation Red Flag) and Operation Noble Eagle which took place in Afghanistan in 2001. In recent times, the Missouri Air National Guard has also deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In Iraq, the unit helped evacuate citizens from Fallujah during Operations Anaconda and Samaritan’s Shield while also providing airlift for Marines during their campaign against ISIS. In Afghanistan, members of the unit flew over areas impacted by NATO forces’ operations such as Kunduz and Zabul Province in order to provide intelligence necessary for airstrikes against Taliban targets. Today, members of the Missouri Air National Guard are still engaged in various deployments throughout our state including exercises with other nations' military forces as well as providing support to local law enforcement agencies when needed.

In 1819, a group of Franciscan monks from the Abbey of St. Ann in Missouri settled on the bluff overlooking the Kansas River. From this location they began to preach the Gospel to Native American tribes living near by. In 1831, Saint Ann's Basilica was founded as a religious house for Native Americans and Catholics in what is now Independence, Missouri. The basilica is still an important destination for worship today. Saint Ann's feast day is March 6th and her feast day is celebrated annually on November 7th in North America and December 9th worldwide.
