St. Ann, Missouri was founded in 1837 by Catholic missionaries from the city of Mexico City. The town became a missionary station on the Missouri River, and soon developed into a small but thriving community. In 1855, the Jesuits built a convent in the town and named it St. Ann after Mother Annunciation, who had been martyred for her faith in Jesus Christ. The nuns continued to serve as pastors and educators in the town until their retirement in 1921. Today, St. Ann is an important cultural center located just outside of Kansas City on I-25 next to Missionary Ridge State Park. It has features such as an art museum, library, primary school and parish hall that are open to the public. The church contains several beautiful murals depicting its history and culture.
In 1847, the first Methodist congregation in St. Ann was organized. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 there were twenty-four churches with a population of over one hundred people. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 allowed slavery in Missouri but also gave slaveowners the right to import two slaves per family into Missouri each year. This caused a lot of tension between slave and free residents of St. Ann because some felt that they were being taken advantage of while others saw the church as an ally against slavery. After several years ofMotion Picture Producers and Distributors Association (MPPA) protests, on July 8, 1867, the General Assembly passed an act providing for homespun cotton to be exported from St. Ann without paying duties on it and this began the African American exodus from St. Ann which continues to this day
