In 1865, General John Buell led an army against Confederate General Sterling Price at St. Ann's Creek in what is now northwestern Arkansas. Price retreated back over the creek after being heavily defeated by Buell's army at what is now White Sands National Monument near Little Rock. Aftermath of this battle led to increased violence between Unionists and Confederates throughout Arkansas until Reconstruction began in 1865; St. Ann's Creek remained a battleground until 1870 when that area was surrendered to Confederate forces following the Battle of Wilson's Hill near present day Springdale, Arkansas (which also helped lead to aspects of modern Arkansas). This event would eventually inspire JE Haggerty to write his song "The Battle Hymn" about Confederate Colonel Robert Ewell’s attempt to drive Union forces out of Corinth on November 16th 1862 during the American Civil War era; this effort failed due to Union reinforcements arriving too late however Ewell’s men were later captured and executed by Ulysses S Grant shortly thereafter at Fort Pulaski which would later become Memphis before finally entering Springfield AR in 1865 as part of Reconstruction days end celebration parade where Haggerty performed triumphantly alongside such luminaries as Andrew Johnson!
