The United States Navy has a rich history in St. Ann, Mo. The navy’s first permanent military installation in the area was Fort Smith on the Missouri River, which opened in 1814. The fort served as a base for the Indian Wars and also helped to suppress piracy on the river. In 1861, Fort Smith was renamed Fort Leonard Wood after General Ulysses S. Grant, commander of Union forces during the Civil War. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia and the Union Army took over control of Missouri. The Navy continued to operate out of Fort Leonard Wood until it closed its doors in 1970. However, naval remnants continued to be stationed in St. Ann through various incarnations until 2003 when they were disbanded at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor Harbor, Washington following the end of Operation Neptune’s Spear—the Iraq War. Today, there are no active U.S Navy installations located within Missouri; however, Saint Ann remains an important port town for sailors commuting to and from duty around the world aboard maritime vessels docked there or ashore on amphibious assault ships or submarines based at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor Harbor and at other naval facilities throughoutSt. Louis County including Jefferson City (Missouri), Brady (Iowa), Florissant (St Louis County) and Pascagoula (Mississippi). In 1881, St. Ann was erected as a Catholic church in the town of Missouri City. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and has a nave, chancel, and two stories. It is one of the few churches in Missouri City that remain from its original construction. The first pastor of St. Ann was Father Alphonse Jarry who served from 1881-1885. Father Jarry spearheaded efforts to build a school in the town and also founded a parish choir which achieved fame for its unique style of musicmaking. Father Jarry's successor, Father John McCarthy, arrived in 1886 and beganconstructing additions to the church including an apse and belltower. In 1898, Father McCarthy dedicated the new facade to Blessed Mother Hilda de Sales with assistance from his wife Conchita Lafontaine. After fifty years of service at Saint Ann Church, Father John Ferguson left for good in 1978 after serving as pastor for thirty-six years. He was succeeded by Reverend Driscoll Egan who held office until 1990 when he retired due to agerelated health problems. Reverend Egan's successor was Revocation Parish Priest Fransisko Pinto who served until 2002 when he decided not to continue because of concerns about funding support for his parish website (www.stannmozillairelandlifecenter). The current rector is Monsignor Gregory McFarlane who has been installed on September 25th, 2010
