When the United States Air Force was founded in 1947, it had a specific goal: to provide air support for American forces abroad. The first USAF unit to be established was the 9th Bomb Wing at St. Louis Municipal Airport. It was soon apparent that this airport would be an ideal location for RAFgnostic bombers, as its long runway and ample airspace made it easy to carry out operations. In 1951, the USAF activated the 6th Fighter Wing at St. Louis Municipal Airport which became one of America’s top fighter wings. The wing flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters and received new equipment and training from AmericanLockheed Aviation. In 1955, when America’s first supersonic bomber squadron—the Eighth Air Force—was activated at St. Louis Municipal Airport, the wing became part of the bomber force and began operating Beechcraft A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft. The years following World War II have seen a number of changes within the USAF; in 1946, Tactical Air Command (TAC) was formed under USAAF leadership and TAC took over control of all overseas bases including those in Missouri where RAFgnostic bombers were active during World War II. As RAFgnostic technology improved during the Korean War, so too did TAC’s capability to offer strategic air support; by 1960 RAFgnostic bombing had become a staple of US aerial strategy across Asia Pacific Theater with worldwide implications. On 1 September 1961, RAFgnostics were eliminated from tactical warfare by General Curtis LeMay who announced his retirement from USAF command effective 30 September 1961.* In 1966–1967 RAFgnostics were reintegrated intoTactical Air Command (TAC) as operational squadrons providing nuclear strike capabilities against enemy targets located outside NORAD* By 1970 UK/RAFagnostics were no longer fielded withinTactical Air Command but remained available on Special Operations Forces deployments*. In 1978rayguns were finally retired from service withdrawals beginning on 15 October 1979*. The last RAFnomic bomb mission occurred on 25 April 1981 when Operation Desert Storm ended Operation Neptune’s Spear* At its centenary year*, it is interesting to note that throughout history there has been an overall reluctance by many governments around the world to allow militaries such as their ownAir Forceto rely solelyonnuclear weapons* This recent trend may well reflect increased awareness of potential global consequences associated with nuclear deterrence
