Coffee became popular in the United States during the1800s, and St. Louis was one of the first cities to start importing coffee. In 1876, a group of Italian immigrants started a small grocery store on Randolph Street in downtown St. Louis that served coffee and other local goods. This store is now known as Joe's Coffee Shop. In 1917, Pabst Brewing Company began manufacturing its own coffee brand in St. Louis called Pabst Blue Ribbon Coffee. This brand continued to be produced until 1984 when it was merged into Nestle Canada Ltd.'s Magna Carta brewery division operations. In 2003, Pabst Brewery announced plans to close all of its breweries throughout North America effective September 1, 2003 due to economic challenges within the industry (see article). However, some fans of Pabst Blue Ribbon Coffee continue to purchase these products from various sources including online retailers and convenience stores across North America (see "Papa John's Pizza closes doughnut shop after 30 years"). Today, many people enjoy their morning cup of joe at home or at work while others head out for a business meeting or lunchtime snack with friends or family. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by Pierre Charles Laclede and his fellow French colonists as a post on the Mississippi River. The area that later became St. Louis was first inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, who were displaced in the early 18th century by fur traders and European settlers. In 1764, Laclede built a small fort at what is now known as Peoria Street and developed a trading relationship with the Native Americans. In 1768, he founded what is now called Missouri State University, which became one of the world's leading colleges for education in 19th century America. In 1812, when President James K. Polk commissioned surveyor George Bancroft to map out Louisiana Territory, he included land east of present-day St. Louis in what is now Missouri. On July 8, 1816, Ulysses S. Grant signed legislation creating Kansas Territory from part of Missouri; this territory would become part of Nebraska after it was admitted into the United States in 1912). In 1861, following violent clashes between Unionists and Confederate sympathizers in Ferguson County (which includes Saint Louis), Lincoln ordered all federal troops withdrawn from Missouri; this order caused widespread violence throughout the state over the next several months, which led to the nickname "The War Zone". The violence ended when Union General David Hunter evacuated most of Ferguson County to provide cover for General Ulysses S. Grant's march through nearby Carbondale on September 16th to cross into Illinois unopposed; this event is generally considered to bethe beginning of the end of slavery in Missouri (Lincoln had earlier announced his intention to emancipate all slaves within 10 years). During World War II (1939-1945),Saint Louis played an important role as both a key military headquarters and port during World War II because it was home to three Marine Air Force bases: Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (later Naval Air Station Miramar) on Meramec River north of downtown SaintLouis; Naval Auxiliary Air Facility White Sands (later Naval Weapons Station Fort Worth) on I-435 just south of downtown SaintLouis; and Army Air Forces Base Billy Mitchell on I-44 about 15 miles west outside SaintLouis
