St. Louis, Missouri is a city in the Midwestern United States. The population was 2,754 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Louis County and is on the eastern edge of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of St. Louis, which has a population of 613,636 as of 2015. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Missouri were French traders and missionaries who founded a mission in 1763 on an island in present-day Clearwater River near modern day Kansas City. The mission was abandoned by 1800 because of Indian attacks. A group of American soldiers under General Anthony Wayne destroyed the mission's facility in 1810 while they were besieging Fort Dearborn on the Iuka River near today's Independence Heights. This event helped start what was later called "the Great Plains War". In 1812, President James Kansa signed legislation creating Michigan Territory including present-day Missouri as part of that territory; this territory would be divided into two parts – one formed by Kansa’s Indiana Territory and another formed by his Kansas Territory – with St.Louis being located within the latterpartitioned section named for him: Saint Louis County (1812). In 1821, a group of Englishmen named The Founders purchased land at what is now Downtown Saint Louis from Nicholas-Jacques Conte for $10 per acre. They began construction on what would become known as The Colony; this structure served as both their home and business center for many years. With its impressive architecture and landscaping, The Colony quickly became one of STL's most popular tourist attractions. Throughout its history, The Colony has been host to numerous cultural events such as summer music festivals and Shakespeare performances.
