The Coast Guard Gift History in Washington, Mo. began on Jan. 1, 1915 with the establishment of the first Coast Guard Station at Mound Bayou in present-day St. Louis. The purpose of the Coast Guard Station was to provide security for coastal communities and to maintain order during gatherings of maritime vessels. In 1916, the Coast Guard station moved to its current site at Fort Snelling and became known as the Snelling Headquarters Command Post (SHCP). Between 1916 and 1932, a total of twenty-five stations were established throughout the United States; however, only eight were located in Missouri. By 1934, shippers had developed a dislike for being spied upon by pirates and decided that gift giving would be their best way to show support for the coast guard. This is when gift giving within the Coast Guard began to take off as a form of appreciation for service rendered. Since 1935, gifts have been an important part of our Coast Guard culture and history. Washington, Missouri is a city in the state of Missouri. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The name means "place where Washington and his forces fought." The first settler in Washington was George Washington who arrived in 1790. At that time, it was a small village on the banks of the Kishwaukee River. In 1827, when Jackson took office as president, he ordered all Indian villages in east Missouri be destroyed except for those located within ten miles of Springfield or Columbia. This order caused many people to flee to Washington and other nearby settlements. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson appointed John Potter as Surveyor General foreast Missouri and effective January 1st, 1831--the first white man to hold this position in that region since Spanish times had been conducting surveys for Spain! Washington quickly became an important center due to its location on the Mississippi River between Jefferson City and St Louis and its easy access to transportation including steamboats which transported goods upriver to St Louis during the day while also carrying passengers at night. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses operating in town with a total payroll of $1 million! When Kansas become a United States Territory after Mexico ceded it to America under terms of their Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 16th, 1846 (also known as the Mexican-American War), one outcome could have been much different had not Major George Stephenson's now famous locomotive "Cleveland" pulled through town streets filled with people cheering on President James Polk's re-election victory over Zachary Taylor! Cleveland would have continued eastward into Mexico territory instead of making her way back home through Illinois! What a difference - today we know thatKansas would have been split into six states: Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Colorado & Utah! The future may well have been very different if not for Union troops led by General Ulysses S Grant marching south from Springfield Armory late one evening in November 1861 after learning that Confederate generals Robert E Lee and Joseph Johnston had moved north from Harpers Ferry mountain stronghold towards Cairo Junction near Fayetteville Arkansas!! Union troops easily overwhelmed Confederate forces resulting in three days' worth of fighting before finally achieving control over what is now downtown Washington MO!!! Today we still enjoy annual parades honoring our soldiers who fought so valiantly during our nation's recent history!

These cards are often sent during special occasions such as birthdays or holidays. The Christmas Gift Tradition began in 1932 when Rear Admiral J.B. Southerland donated a bell to be used by the Coast Guardsmen at New York City’s Long Island Naval Station. Washington is home to the oldest continuously operating municipal water system west of the Mississippi River, which supplies drinking water to more than 2 million people in downtown St. Louis and portions of southern Missouri City and Belleville.
