Billings, Montana is a town in the U.S. state of Montana. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Billings County and home to the University of Montana at Bozeman. The first European settlers in what would become Billings were French fur traders who discovered gold in 1858 and set up a trading post on the western edge of present-day Billings County. They named their new settlement for General James Monell, commander of Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The post office was established in 1860, and by 1870, it had become a busy center for trade with ranchers and farmers in what is now eastern Yellowstone National Park. In 1876, Congress passed an act creating Yellowstone National Park; this led to increased mining activity throughout much of northwestern Montana Territory but also helped spur development around Bozeman as well as nearby Butte City and Gardiner Springs. In 1883, President Grover Cleveland designated Bozeman its Municipal Court Seat; this made it one of only two towns in America to have this distinction (the other being Newark, New Jersey). The city changed its name to Billings in 1907 when it became an incorporated municipality under Montanan Constitution No., §5(1), which provided that "The Name Of The Town Be Changeable As Soon As Possible". In 1912–13 there was significant turmoil within Idaho Territory over whether or not to join Canada or become part of Mexico; as a result, many people fled into northeast Montana Territory where they formed some of the most powerful ranching families around. One notable family fromBILLINGS contributed $25 million—more than any other group—to help finance World War II efforts through organizations such as United States Steel Corporation's Defense Production Board (DPB). By 1970, however, economic stagnation had set into motion challenges facing local leaders including organized crime and drug trafficking which has characterized much recent political life hereabouts ever since - making law enforcement one area near top priority for both police officers and residents alike! Billings was founded in 1872 by Jim Bridger and his brother John. The town grew quickly, and by 1880 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1902, the city fathers decided to annex the neighboring village of Fort Benton. This annexation created a new town named Billings proper, which had a population of 3,500 people by 1912. The city's growth continued unabated through the years, and in 1938 it reached its present size.
