On July 14, 1945 the post became Headquarters Ninth Marines when Headquarters Sixth Marine Regiment moved to Fort Lewis from Vancouver Island Naval Base. The headquarters regiment was disbanded on September 2nd, 1946 and its members transferred to HQ Tenth Marines which became an infantry unit inactivated on October 3rd 1946 at Camp Pendleton California
