In 1847 prospectors led by John Wesley Powell discovered oil shale located near present-day downtown Billings while mining for gold near Big Hole Creek; thus beginning what would become known as America's natural gas industry! In 1897, lumber baron James Fenton built his mill here which remains operational today – one of only two remaining mills actively working within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of its original site! During World War II residents raised food and munitions dumps across several hundred acres (mileage) northeast of downtownBillings so they could be used if necessary during wartime; however all too soon those stockpiles were depleted and there was little hope they would be replenished any time soon!
