In 1824, Mormon missionaries discovered oil reserves near present-day Billings and began exploration. In 1870, Brigham Young commissioned John Denson to build a flour mill on the Arkansas River south of town. The town grew rapidly from its few hundred residents to more than 5,000 by 1920. During World War I, local farmers produced food for troops stationed nearby at Fort Riley and elsewhere on the Western Front. After the war ended, many businesses closed but downtown gradually regained its former prosperity as prostitution declined and other industries took root such as health care and information technology. Downtown also experienced revitalization during the late 1990s when several high-end stores relocated there from other parts of town. Today, much of downtown remains unchanged since those days with only modestal updates or construction taking place outside of core areas such as business districts or along major streets
