Butte Silver Bow is a small town in Montana, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Butte Silver Bow is located in Butte County. In 1881, Spanish immigrant José María Orozco settled what is now Butte Silver Bow. He named it after his discovery of silver ore on the property in 1876. In 1907, the U.S. government bought all of the silver claims in Butte County from Orozco and established Fort Washakie as a mining headquarters to control access to the resources. Camp Cooke was also built nearby for military purposes during World War II. The post office opened in 1909 and closed in 1951 because of budget cuts by then-Secretary of Commerce James Byrnes Jr.. The first postmaster was Avelino Gomez and he served until 1912 when John Hogg took over for Gomez. Hogg served until 1934 when he resigned to become mayor ofeno (now Red Lodge).
