Butte Silver Bow is a small town in Butte County, Montana, near the junction of U.S. Route 12 and Montana Route 82. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Helena-Billings Metropolitan Statistical Area. Butte Silver Bow was founded in 1894 by silver miners from Butte and other parts of what is now northeastern Montana Territory as a stop on their way to prospect forilver in those wilds. The mines closed in the early 1920s, but the city grew up around them nonetheless. By 1960, however, only 1 percent of its residents were still employed in mining or processing activities; most were farmers or ranchers who used the area for grazing and crops. The post office at Butte Silver Bow opened on January 3, 1889, and was named for Battle Axe Creek (or Butt Creek), which ran through that townland. At first it served only residents of Butte; later it became known as an important mail stop on the Intermountain West Railroad between Helena and Billings. In 1912 a new courthouse was built at Butte Silver Bow while construction continued on another nearby courthouse also designed by architect George Gibbs Jr., which finally opened in 1915 after several years of delay due to weather conditions. That year also saw the opening of one of America's largest agricultural fairs—the Missoula Agricultural Fair—which attracted great attention from both locals and visitors from all over the country. For many years this event had been one of buttes' primary drawsmastering local economies as well as providing much needed revenue for schools, hospitals and other civic organizations throughout western Montana Territory during what has come to be called "the Golden Age"of agriculture thereabouts).
