The name Butte comes from Chief Joseph's request for help during his battle against the United States government during the Indian Wars. The silver arrowheads and jewelry that were found in Butte are some of the first evidence of human activity in this area. One of the largest silver mines in America was located here, but it closed down in 1892. However, other smaller silver mines have been found throughout Butte County since then. The townsite was platted on July 25, 1903 by Jerald Haines and David Hatch with assistance from Harry Sorensen and John Condon from nearby Lander City. It became a city on January 12, 1906 under Mayor Augustus Dickey after a petition drive by citizens failed to receive enough signatures to make it an official city charter candidate. On December 5, 1912 President Woodrow Wilson delivered his final address at Fort Bridger before departing for Europe. In it he spoke about how important it was for America to maintain its "spontaneous order" while he was away and asked Congress to pass legislation authorizing Butte's incorporation into Great Falls as a municipally chartered city effective January 1, 1913. After several more petitions were submitted no action was taken until 1916 when mayor Clarence Wickersham authorized incorporation with 3rd class status due to lack of funding available for further growth within the limits set forth in the charter ordinance under which Butte had been incorporated originally).
