The Great Falls Army National Guard unit, the 9th Infantry Regiment, was mobilized in 1938 and World War II began less than a year later. The regiment was sent to the European Theater of Operations in Patton's American Desert Campaign and then to the Battle of Normandy. In 1945, the regiment returned home and deployed to Korea as part of United Nations forces. In 1951, they were again mobilized for Operation Summerhill and served in Vietnam before being disbanded in 1973. Since its disbandment, the 9th Infantry Regiment has been reactivated multiple times and currently serves with duty at Fort Lewis National Cemetery in Olympia, Washington; Fort Riley National Military Park near Wichita Kansas; and Camp Roberts located on Antietam Battlefield where it fought during the Civil War.

Great Falls, Montana is the largest city in the U.S. state of Montana and the seat of Great Falls County. The population was 68,814 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Missouri River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Missoula and 25 miles (40 km) south of Helena. It is also home to several national parks and monuments including Glacier National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, and Yellowstone National Park. The current City of Great Falls dates back to 1882 when it was named for great falls in central Canada where a small community had been established by fur traders since 1786. By 1870, when Great Falls became an incorporated town under territorial jurisdiction it had a population of over 1,000 people. However, growth stagnated until after World War I when heavy industry arrived with new jobs at local mills and other businesses brought new residents into town as well as development of transportation infrastructure such as a road network and water system that made it easier for goods to be transported across the Missouri River from eastern Canada to Great Falls harbor. Great Falls is a town in Great Falls County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Great Falls was first settled by the Crow and Kiowa people in the late 19th century. In 1881, James A. Garfield was elected president of the United States and Great Falls became one of his presidential retreats. The townsite was platted in 1886 by John J. Atchison, who donated land for a post office and school district. The most notable event to occur in or around Great Falls occurred on November 6, 1885 when 5 passengers and crew of the USS Constitution were lost overboard while sailing from Portland, Oregon to New York City via Honolulu Bay. This tragedy led to increased interest in cruising through Hawaii's waters and helped spur development along what is now called Constitution Boulevard. In 1902, local entrepreneur George Hearn built a hydroelectric plant on Rosebud Creek just north of town which remains operational today (though it has been mothballed for many years). In 1906, he also erected an observation tower over Big Hole Lake which still stands today with a gift shop inside (now occupied by nearby Zion National Park). This site served as the primary terminus for mail delivery between Great Falls and Helena until 1959 when that service migrated to Bozeman, Montana instead. During World War II, much effort went into creating munitions plants within walking distance of town so that local residents could help contribute their skills towards military production goals; however none ever came to fruition due to wartime restrictions on labor-saving technologies developed during peacetime. Great falls has seen some redevelopment over time including efforts beginning in the early 2000s to bring retail shopping back into town center after being vacated by general store operators during accommodative housing market conditions following 9/11/2001imentary events; however all efforts have failed to materialize as most businesses closed down prior to economic downturn later that decade combined with lack of appropriations from government planners overseeing these endeavors at any point thereafter - further illustrating how difficult it is for small communities such as Great Fall
