The Helena Army National Guard was organized on July 1, 1863, in Helena, Montana. The unit’s first commander was Maj. Gen. George Armstrong Custer and it served as a militia until 1872. On December 12, 1875 the regiment was re-organized and redesignated the 1st Montana Cavalry Regiment. The regiment disbanded on October 15, 1907 due to World War I service and again on October 15, 1924 due to World War II service. On November 5, 1861 the Helena Armory was dedicated in honor of Adjutant General James Halleck who had also been a delegate from Helena to the Confederate States Congress during the Civil War. In 1865 General Custer commanded what is now the 1st Montana Cavalry Regiment which fought at Battle of Little Big Horn near Sheridan Kansas. After South Dakota became an independent state in 1889 the 1st Montana Cavalry Regiment was stationed at Topeka until 1912 when it moved to Great Falls where it remained until 1918 when it returned to Helena after serving in France during World War I. In 1924 Major General John Pemberton activated 2nd Battalion (2nd Infantry) Infantry Regiment No 476th Infantry Brigade Combat Team #1 based in Great Falls for service with United Nations forces during World War II as part of Allied Forces Europe known as “Allied Force Italy” under command of Admiral Chester Nimitz Jr., Commander Pacific Theater Fleet Fleet control center Marcus Island Naval Base Hawaii

Helena is a small town in eastern Montana, located on the banks of the Missouri River. The community was founded in 1872 by Helena and its original residents were members of the Mormon Church. The area had been used by European scouts during Indian Wars until 1871 when General George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry discovered gold discoveries at Fort Peck across the river from what is now Helena. However, only about one-third of this discovery was exploited before gold prices crashed after Reconstruction began; silver exploration commenced soon afterward. As a result of this crash in prices for silver coins (the value of which had tripled since 1853), many miners abandoned claims around Helena because they could not make money without Silver Certificates (an artifact or coin worth five cents). In 1946, Congress authorized purchase of all remaining mineral rights surrounding Fort Peck so that development could begin closer to Missoula instead; however no construction occurred until 1951 when two dams were constructed downstream from Fort Peck Jewelry Co., making possible flood control purposes for nearby Missoula while allowing largescale irrigation into much needed farmland east of town along the Missouri River Valley Agricultural Districts Project Canal project area once part of Hamilton Township but now within City Limits Of Missoula due to annexation by Missoula following passage by local voters en masse (overwhelmingly) ratifying proposition No 2222 asking for incorporation intoMissoula pursuant to article V §5 RCW art I cProviso thereto4/.
