The area around today’s downtown has been inhabited for thousands of years by Native Americans including the Siksika Sioux tribe which lived here before European contact arrived in what is now Idaho and Montana in 1604 Arapaho Chief Sitting Bull surrendered his forces to white settlers at Bannock Bayou after Fort Laramie was built nearby in 1868 during Nebraska–Colorado Expedition under President Andrew Johnson
