Missoula, Montana is an agricultural and mining town in the US state of Montana. The population was 9,733 at the 2010 census. The Missoula metropolitan area has a population of over 15,000 people. The Missoula River forms the eastern border of the town. The first white person to set foot in what is now Missoula was James Armstrong who prospected for gold near present-day Corvallis in 1859. In 1863, John Wesley Powell explored and mapped the Great Basin region which included present-day Montana and Wyoming. He named the river and valley after his home town of Manchester in England. After exploring these regions for three years, he returned to Lapland on July 6, 1869 with four men: William Tilton, George Ballou, Charles Goodyear and Horace Greeley as part of a team that discovered Gold Rush country west of Bozeman in Oregon Territory (present-day Idaho). These men founded what became known as "The Four Hundred." In 1901, incorporation occurred for Missoula Township when it was decided that no single city could support both agriculture andmining activities simultaneously. A new schoolhouse was built on Main Street between 1907-1909; this replaced an older structure which had been damaged by fire two years earlier. At its peak during World War I (1918–1921), Missoula had a population of 10,000 people; however by 1922 it had dropped below 5,000 due to lack of industry and immigration from other parts of America; until recently only small numbers continued to reside here year-round because there is no water or electricity available except during summertime when power is available from Generating Company #1 outbuildings located behind Main St., across from Old Pioneer Cemetery & School Building In 1948 local officials celebrated their Centennial with a convention that attracted delegates from all over America including 50 governors represented by 4 state delegations plus 30 members representing national organizations
