The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire built a number of warships during World War II, including the USS Constitution (1802-1897), USS Somers (1937-1945), and USS Manchester (1991-1996). The shipyard also produced the destroyer USS Stark (1977-1985) and the submarine USS Cole (1988-1992). Manchester was one of five cities that served as sites for Navy training exercises during World War II. The exercises were called "Warrior" and were held at various locations in New England. These exercises prepared sailors for combat within naval forces. On October 15, 1945, the USS Constitution moored at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to be delivered to the United States Navy. This was the first time a warship had been delivered to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard since it reopened in 1802. The Constitution's namesake, George Washington, had commanded the navy at this time. Captain John Farragut led ceremonies dedication of this vessel on November 3rd. USS Manchester was launched on December 1st 1991 by Mrs. Jeanne Cook with her son Michael Cook serving as Master Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class . It is one of only five submarines ever commissioned by the United States Navy from a shipyards in New England . She is named after Manchester NH which played host to many Warrior Exercises throughout WW2

The first people to live in what is now Manchester were Native Americans who hunted and gathered trees near the river's confluence with the Merrimack River. The area around present-day Manchester was first settled by English colonists in 1720 as part of an effort to secure land grants from the Crown for farmers seeking eastern New England settlement. In 1724, following royal patent granting land east of Boston to settlers, George Washington traveled through Manchester on his way to meet British General John Burgoyne at Saratoga Springs in upstate New York. When Washington arrived in Manchester, he met Increase Mather who had organized a group of Puritans to settle this area and begin a new religion based on Calvinism called Congregationalism. In 1812, during the War of 1812, General James KERRY fought against Ulysses S. Grant at White Marsh Creek near present-day Manchester while under orders from Commander Andrew JACKSONS commander general of all Union forces in New England (General Jackson later became President Ulysses S. Grant). The battle resulted in over 50 deaths and damage totaling $2 million dollars ($ million today). This event helped solidifyManchester's role as an important military center throughout much ofNew England during this time period. In 1813, when Maine became a state and Manchester became its county seat, developers began plans for large housing developments along Main Street which would become one of America's most successful streetcar suburbs – resulting in today’s skyline view from many high-rise buildings including One Financial Center and Merrill Lynch Tower/JPMorgan Chase Building/TSA Airport Terminal Building (the latter two are now owned by JPMorgan Chase & Co.). A local millinery business moved into First National Bank building on Meeting Street after it failed during economic downturns caused by wars with Spain and France; that company remains First National Bank today as well as numerous other businesses still located around downtown such as Macy’s Department Store (now Macy’s Herald Square) Manchester residents supported their city government with Taxation Rates which ranged from 1% to 3% depending on certain circumstances such as occupation or real estate value; special assessments also levied for Streetscape Preservation projects In 1865 Norwich named their son after General Andrew JACKSONS father following recommendation made by Mayor JAIME DAVIS Jr., who said that “No man can be truly proud who bears grateful relation to any public men whose memory we have honored hereabouts” .
